Michael Halpern Wants You to Wear Sequins and Velvet Pants

Michael Halpern is here for a good time, not a long time. At least, that’s the sense that we get from his 80’s-themed collection for high street retailer Topshop. Halpern’s runway designs are always a sight to behold: for every “elevated basic” out there, his brand matches it with a hundred sequins carefully constructed into different patterns, sometimes resembling stripes or leopard spots.

You always need basics,” he tells Vogue of the collection, adding, “but I think now people want something special; they want something that has an emotional quality to it. Having a sparkly frock or having a sparkly jumpsuit that you can wear and you get a little escapism from that and a break from the world—I think that’s important.”

Escapism? At a time like this? Halpern might be onto something. The nostalgia runs deep in his collection, which features dresses with shoulder pads and puff-sleeves, balanced out by more modern pieces like mini handbags and bucket hats, and fluorescent green.
