Netflix Released a First Look at the New ‘Sabrina’ Series

When Sabrina was a show from 1996-2003, it was a fairly light-hearted look at being a teenage witch living with your two aunts. This year’s upcoming Netflix reboot with Kiernan Shipka looks to be a much more haunting take on the coming-of-age series.

A first look was released yesterday of the new series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Shipka makes her debut as Sabrina Spellman in the first photos released of the show that is a continuation of the world from The CW’s Riverdale.

The show’s premise explores Sabrina as she wrestles with the duality of her nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while also fighting off evil forces that threaten the world around her. Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre Sacasa helms the show that’s based off the Archie Comics series that first debuted in 1962.

The fizzy ‘90s Sabrina millennials grew up with is being reimagined as something much darker. The Netflix description reads:

“Tonally in the vein of ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and ‘The Exorcist,’ this adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family, and the daylight world humans inhabit.”

The show’s 10-episode season premieres on October 26, and it’s already been picked up for a second season.
