On Australian news program The Sunday Project, Williams talked about her friendship with Markle. When asked if they give each other advice, the tennis champion said with a laugh that the two had texted each other just that morning.
“We have known each other for a long time, but we really, kind of, are relying on each other a lot recently,” Williams said. She and Markle have weathered their share of drama recently, with Williams’ U.S. Open controversy and the Duchess of Sussex’s issues with her half-sister Samantha Grant and father Thomas Markle.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion also talked about attending the royal wedding.
“To have such a monumental moment in England, nonetheless of all the places, I felt like we were literally watching history,” Williams said. “And I feel like in a few years we are going to look back at that moment and it’s going to be so historic that ― it’s going to be something that people never forget.”
Serena Williams and Markle reportedly became friends in 2010, and the Duchess watched Williams at Wimbledon this year. Check out a clip of the interview here:
