Château Monestier La Tour

$95

For more than twenty-five years, the Scheufele family searched for an interesting château in France to live out their passion for wine. Château Monestier La Tour was like a coup de foudre, and the charm of the place immediately overwhelmed them. The château dates back to a thirteenth-century monastery and stands proudly on a small hill overlooking Monestier, a historic village just next to Bergerac. Nestled in the Périgord region of France—a paradise for gourmands, wine lovers, and history buffs—Château Monestier La Tour’s heritage is as rich and elegant as the wines it produces. This exceptional volume traverses the château’s legacy of viticulture, first officially recorded in 1792; after being passed down through noble French families, it was picked up by proprietors from New Zealand and the Netherlands before being acquired in 2012 by the Scheufele family, who have restored the château to its cozy grandeur. Written by Swiss wine expert Chandra Kurt, the five chapters are “The Périgord, a Land of Plenty,” “Gastronomy, from Truffles to Foie Gras,” “The History of Wine in Bergerac,” “Château Monestier La Tour” and “The Biodynamic Universe.” For Timeless Périgord the château opens its doors and Italian photographer Jacopo Salvi captures its beauty through all four seasons—including wine production, truffle hunting, and working in the vineyards, the biodynamic gardens and the kitchen. In addition, this Classics Collection volume is punctuated with over two dozen delectable recipes made with regional ingredients, from starters such as Eggs in Red Wine Sauce and Truffled Foie Gras Terrine, to Pot-au-Feu and Rotisserie Chicken with Sautéed Vegetables, to Crème Brûlée and Pear Tart Bourdaloue. “We love the tranquility in this place, and when we are here time shows a different dimension. Manhattan's Babe

$35

This illustrated English-language edition of French writer-filmmaker Frédéric Beigbeder’s 2014 novel, Oona & Salinger. A nostalgic and bittersweet love story, Manhattan’s Babe is a fictionalized account of the true-life romance between J.D. Salinger and Oona O’Neill, daughter of the great American playwright. The two first met in New York City in 1940, when Jerry Salinger, 21, was an up-and-coming writer, and Oona, 15, was a beautiful and charming socialite who partied at the Stork Club with Truman Capote and Gloria Vanderbilt. Their all-too-short romance blossomed during the summer of 1941, just a few months before the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and the U.S. joined World War II. Then Salinger was drafted into the Army, and Oona went off to seek her fortune in Hollywood. He endured D-Day, battle in the Hürtgen Forest, and the liberation of the camps, and suffered post-traumatic stress, leading him to retreat from the world. She lived the glamorous life of a film star in Los Angeles, and met and married the much older Charlie Chaplin, bearing him eight children, standing with him when Hollywood turned against him, and caring for him as he became infirm. Inspired by true events, with scenes, characterizations, dialogue, and letters imagined for dramatic purposes, Beigbeder asks the poignant question, What would they say to each other if they had met again years later? *SEP**SEP* Frédéric Beigbeder is a French writer, literary critic, filmmaker, and television host. He is the creator of the Prix de Flore and chairs its jury, and he is also editorial director of Lui magazine. La Colombe d’Or hotel and restaurant in the South of France is known all over the world as a privileged place where the Provençal art de vivre goes hand in hand with an astonishing private COLLECTION of modern art. First opened in 1920 as Chez Robinson, a café-bar with an open-air terrace, it quickly became a very popular meeting place and expanded into a small hotel and restaurant. The friendly atmosphere together with owner Paul Roux’s deep interest in the arts attracted many artists of the day, and the walls were soon covered by paintings, often exchanged for a stay or a few meals. As regular visitors to this beautiful place, Matisse, Braque, Léger, Calder, César, and many other artists have left magnificent works that now form part of the unique setting, including splendid pages in the fascinating guest books—presented to the world for the first time in this volume—in which the greatest artists of our time have drawn and signed moments of happiness. The next generation of the Roux family continues to care for the Colombe d’Or, and the art COLLECTION is still growing today. “Provence has a treasure; it’s a Colombe d’Or. It has the precious scent of thyme and nostalgia and the golden colour of olive oil and happy days. The Colombe is a part of my life.
