Meet The Editor-Turned-Singer With An Eyeliner Obsession

Very few moments in the day are as bare as the moment you wake up. We each have our own kinks and quirks that help us get out of bed, but few of us are brave enough to share them with the world. Introducing A Cool Morning, a deep dive into the intimate daytime rituals of our coolest friends and beauty innovators.

Below, former magazine editor-turned-singer TRACE gives us a deep dive into her working strolls around Silver Lake, her DIY conditioner, and more:

What’s the first thing you do every morning?

I’m trying my best to not go straight to my phone. I meditate and make time for a little prayer of gratitude. It helps fend off the anxiousness that can arise in my mind and day.

Do you have a morning workout routine?

New-ish to Pure Barre and I’m obsessed. I’ve done a lot of other types of workouts and classes plus the gym etc, but I really feel stronger and physically different with Pure Barre which is cool to see. I try to be active every morning and also add in walks around the reservoir in Silver Lake since it’s extremely convenient and nice to just roam… maybe people watch.

Shower at-night, morning, or both?

Curve ball, midday. Or night.

Daily alarm time? How many times do you hit snooze?

Usually 7am. Alexa wakes me up with good kinds of sounds so,  0-1 times.

If you’re running late, what’s the one thing you have to do?

Brushing my teeth and eyeliner.

Favorite breakfast?

Bacon (crispy) and eggs (soft scrambled) and avocado please.

Weirdest morning beauty habit?

This isn’t weird but I do love putting face oil on my…well, face after putting moisturizer on. I also line my face with coconut oil my mom brought back from Vietnam. Whatever she says goes so I trust this “native” oil will be good for my skin.

What does your morning hair-care routine look like?

I’m always like, how can I get my hair looking wavy, healthy, and fresh. I think learning about the importance of the scalp was a recent discovery—especially when I cut off like 15 inches a couple of years ago (I had to really start caring, there were so many products to look into and do research on).  My faves have been “Mare” which is a sea mist and this awesome scalp tonic called “Cake” and both are by Reverie. The scents they have are also insane and my favorite kinds of scents ever. Masculine and yet somehow chic. My shampoo and conditioning routine consists of using a sage-citrus cleansing bar by No Tox Life and simply apple cider vinegar (diluted) as conditioner (it’s also super good for your scalp!).

How much time do you spend on your skincare routine?

I’m getting better. With working out, it’s difficult to do much to my skin before, but I’ve learned moisturizer is key WITH sunscreen. My skin is on the drier side so products like Shiseido’s Ultimate Sun Protector and Tatcha’s Dewy Skin Cream are my faves. I also love Sircuit Skin’s Cloud 9+ Intensely protective moisture creme. After that process I always use January Lab’s Restorative Tonic Mist throughout my day to give me a refresher.

How long do you usually take to get ready for the day?

Not very long. I’d say ten minutes tops.

What’s the one product you could never leave the house without putting on?

Perfume, my favorite eye liner in the world by Palladio, and Glossier’s Haloscope highlighter. (Sorry, I know you said one)

The first word/thing that popped into your head this morning?

Love your life, and the people in it (cheesy, sure, but I swear my second thought wasn’t as emotionally mature).

Your favorite morning read?

I read The Skimm for current events, Vulture for the pop culture round up, and a daily devotional that comes through my phone to make sure my insides feel grounded.

What’s on your nightstand right now?

“On Earth, We’re Briefly Gorgeous,” by Ocean Vuong.

What’s the current ringtone on your alarm?

My girl Alexa. Classical music, baby.

Coffee, tea, or go-to morning drink?

Coffee forever. Espresso over ice if you’re really interested.

What’s the last thing you did before you headed out the door today?

Actually rehearsed singing in my room, practicing a cover for my upcoming show because I KEEP MIXING UP THE LYRICS.
