The collection is all thanks to the more than 26,000 people who signed a Change.org petition asking for a MAC x Aaliyah collection. The petition was started by super-fan Jennifer Risinger, and it followed the success of another fan-driven collection, the MAC for Selena capsule. Aaliyah for MAC is a tribute to the singer’s iconic street-meets-sweet style, and it’s been approved by her family since the petition was launched.
“It’s definitely magical how the fans came out and sort of — as they do with everything — ask my mother and me, ‘Is it OK? We really want this to happen,'” Rashad Haughton, Aaliyah’s older brother, told Allure. “And it was a no-brainer because of how much my sister loved M.A.C. and how she used it in her everyday life and her career, so we said, ‘Go for it.'”
The collection takes inspiration from the late singer’s song titles and Aaliyah herself. There’s a “More Than a Woman” lipstick and a “Brooklyn Born” lipgloss that pays tribute to her Bed Stuy roots. The capsule consists of four lipsticks, four lip glosses, two lip pencils, an eye palette, and a bronzing powder. The whole collection looks stunning, and a few of our favorites at first glance are the Street Thing lipstick, with a dark, shimmery black hue, and the Lipglass in Li Li’s Motor City, a sharp, lustrous red.
“At MAC, we’re always looking at leveraging these platforms and in this case, it really brought a collection to life,” Catherine Bomboy Dougherty, senior vice president of global communications at MAC, told the Los Angeles Times. “This is a tribute collection, but I think you could also say this is a Beauty Icon collection. Even two decades after her passing, Aaliyah has this really positive, noticeable effect on pop culture. She embodies a MAC girl. She’s the perfect fit for us. She was a lover and user of the products and she continues to be a role model for a lot of people globally.”
