Your Favorite Childhood Accessory Is Back

It’s no secret hair accessories are having a moment right now. The plastic dollar-store headbands and fluorescent-colored butterfly clips have gotten an upgrade with designer brands and finer materials. So accepting have adult women become of the childhood relic, in fact, that the barrette has had a heavy smattering of appearances atop a handful of heads during the days of New York, London and Milan Fashion Weeks. It’s even made an appearance at the recent Oscars: see Gemma Chan rocking a sparkler over her low chignon and Josephine Skriver heading to the after-party with a halo of glittering stars woven into her locks.

When questioning how to wear the bedazzled big sister of a youthful favorite, embrace your inner elementary kid and just slip on one. Make a literal statement in a spell-out of words ranging from the placid “Cool” and “Girls,” to more blatant “Anxiety,” made popular by British fashion designer Ashley Williams. Or, for something just as attention-grabbing, you can keep logomania going strong with Gucci’s interlocking G’s.

If your agenda calls for a more understated look, stick with a simple silver bobby pin studded with crystals. Cross a pair into an X shape for a little more oomph. Don’t forget stars and celestial objects, either. Jennifer Behr has you covered with gunmetal-colored brass slides that look ethereal in wavy tresses.
