Why This Clean Beauty Founder Keeps Things Basic

Very few moments in the day are as bare as the moment you wake up. We each have our own kinks and quirks that help us get out of bed, but few of us are brave enough to share them with the world. Introducing A Cool Morning, a deep dive into the intimate daytime rituals of our coolest friends and beauty innovators.

Living a clean, toxic-free life is more than just sipping on green juices and doing early morning yoga. It’s a lifestyle that depends on every aspect of your day-to-day routine—including your makeup bag. Enter: the green beauty movement in the beauty-scape, which has provided us with tons of products sans the synthetics, toxins, and other red flags that have been lingering in our cosmetics.

Wading to the forefront of the clean beauty phenomena is aesthetically pleasing brand lilah b., spearheaded by none other than founder Cheryl Yannotti Foland. What makes this brand stand out from the rest is not only its packaging that represents Foland’s taste for luxurious minimalism, but their best-selling products that actually, well, work.

It’s no surprise that Foland’s brand is such a success, considering the fact that she’s dedicated to everything she does — including her beauty routine, of course. Below, we take a deep look into Foland’s essential morning regimen.

What’s the first thing you do every morning?

Coffee first — always.  I am a bit of a coffee snob and am currently loving Taylor Lane which is a roastery in Sonoma Valley. I like time in the morning with Lilah (brand’s namesake, our Rhodesian Ridgeback) and my husband to set the day on a positive note.  I usually get a sloppy kiss bedside when the pup wants to start her day.

Do you have a morning workout routine?

Either a trail run or quick 30 minutes on the Peloton at home to get the juices flowing before getting into the office by about 7:30 AM. I like the quiet time before my team arrives to lay out my day and/or week ahead.

Shower at-night, morning, or both?

Morning for sure since it usually follows exercise!

Daily alarm time? How many times do you hit snooze?

Doggie alarm: 5:30 am – no possibility of hitting snooze!

If you’re running late, what’s the one thing you have to do?

Shower for sure, but makeup and hair can be forfeited. I have the slicked-back ballerina bun on point from years of running out the door in 30 minutes or less.

Favorite breakfast?

Multi-grain English muffin with butter.  If I have more time — particularly on weekends — I’ll add a poached egg or two with avocado

Weirdest morning beauty habit?

Not sure I really have one — although I do comb my hair about fifty times when I get out of the shower as I detest knots and snarls.

What does your morning hair-care routine look like?

Kerastase color-treated hair shampoo and Aveda damage remedy conditioner every day.  I don’t use any product pre-blow dry, but I definitely use Playa’s Ritual Oil to tame the frizzies.

How much time do you spend on your skincare routine?

My skincare routine is about as minimal as my color – I use ReVive Sensitive Day Moisturizer with SPF 30 because I LOVE multitasking products that make my life easier – and their eye cream is amazing.  Sunday nights I use Drunk Elephant’s Baby Facial for a fresh face to start the week – in lieu of an actual facial at the spa, it’s amazingly effective.

How long do you usually take to get ready for the day?

30-45 minutes tops – depending on if I take time to blow dry/fuss with my hair.

What’s the one product you could never leave the house without putting on?

Lip product – either our Divine Duo Lip & Cheek or our Lovingly Lip Tinted Lip Oil.

The first word/thing that popped into your head this morning?

“It’s raining.” Drippy fog in San Francisco actually sounds like rain most Summer months.

Your favorite morning read?

New York Times online midweek, and their physical copy on Sundays.

What’s on your nightstand right now?

Shoe Dog by the Founder of Nike, Phil Knight. Interesting insight from an inspiring founder on his mistakes and successes.

What’s the current ringtone on your alarm?

Not sure, but it is annoying. I am not a fan of alarms unless I absolutely have to set one and much prefer waking up naturally.

Coffee, tea, or go-to morning drink?

Coffee, Coffee, Coffee.

What’s the last thing you did before you headed out the door today?

Grabbed a banana for my late morning snack.
