No one has ever seen as much black as the attendees of the Dior Haute Couture Fall 2019 show, which no doubt made the final look, a bright gold dollhouse a welcome—if not surprising—relief.
Creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri offered wool suits and gothic sheer lace gowns in dark hues for her take on couture for the colder months, with one sole white item: a shirt emblazoned with the Bernard Rudofsky quote, “Are clothes modern?” in courier new/typewriter font. But it was the doll house-dress, a miniature version of 30 Avenue Montaigne, that stole the show.

The alleged reference behind the design is feminist artist Penny Slinger‘s Doll Houses series from the ’70s, which unpacked femininity. The look was accessorized with a black, netted veil and lace-up-inspired fishnet stockings.
Noticeably, despite the heaviness of the styles, each model was sent down the runway in strappy gladiator sandals. The collection has raised some eyebrows, perhaps because MGC certainly toed the line between couture and costume.
Regardless, I would very much like to know the rent for the gold doll house, please.
