At the end of February, during Paris Fashion Week, Simon Porte Jacquemus made audiences squee—and possibly squint—with delight at the impossibly teeny handbag that walked the runway of his show for his eponymous line, Jacquemus. Bitty bags have been a predominate fashion trend over the past several years, along with other styles that feel distinctly now (see: beaded bags, woven bags, and acetate designs). However, as much joy as these playful, statement pieces bring us (which is a lot), for many women there’s a need for an everyday bag that can physically hold up to her demanding life.
An everyday handbag serves a purpose: to allow its wearer to go about her day with ease, style, and the ability to hold necessities beyond just a cell phone, wallet, and keys. It’s not too mini, not too tricky to carry on one’s shoulder, and it’s also not the kind of design that can be described as safe or basic. At least, that’s not indicative of the styles we found on the market right now.
Feel free to indulge in the tiniest bags your hands can hold, too, but when it comes to a style that truly allows you to feel supported—without being creatively stifled—throughout the day, see below.
